We don’t hear a lot about honor today. We hear a lot of judging, shaming, and “outing.” But not much about honor. And that’s a shame because honor is really important in life. Honoring others, honoring yourself, honoring your life as a whole. This is what allows you to see the value in things. And it’s been a huge part of my ethos for many years. Keep reading to learn more.

My Instinct to Honor

Every once in a while, I’ll get a call from my grandmother on my father’s side. Maybe once a decade, she’ll call to see how I’m doing, and we’ll chat for a few minutes. I have no problem with that. However, we never had much of a relationship. So, I never felt close to her. In fact, I never even called her grandma. I mostly just referred to her by her real name.

However, when she got in touch to let me know that my father had passed away, I made it a point to clear my schedule, fly out, and attend the funeral. Why? Because even though we weren’t close, I still had an instinct to honor.

The One Who Taught Me Honor

My wife is everything to me. And I’m always amazed by her. How well she’s put together, how she always prioritizes her mental health, how she cares for and nurtures our children, and just the incredible wife and mother that she is. And that’s when it hit me… My wife taught me that when you honor others, you’re actually caring for yourself.

Why Honor is a Hack

You may wonder why I call honor a hack. There are a few special reasons for this. Let’s dive into them so that you can see how important honor truly is in life.

  1. It builds genuine connections and strengthens relationships
  2. It inspires reciprocity and goodwill
  3. It enhances emotional well-being and happiness
  4. It creates role models and inspires positive action

These are the things that make honor such a crucial part of our culture. And for this reason, it’s important to honor those around you as often as possible.
