As a leader, one of the things you must always be aware of is your energy. More specifically, where it’s going and how it’s been allocated. Because let’s face it, no one has a limitless amount of energy that they can deploy. All of us are constrained by our energy limitations. So we have to watch where our energy is being drained. This is what I call leadership energy leaks. Keep reading to learn more.

The Paradox of High Performance

If you’re reading this right now, it tells me that you’re a high performer. You have high standards and expectations when it comes to your results. However, the paradox of that kind of mindset is that it becomes easier to see the “holes” in your performance. Why? Because you’re more FOCUSED on them than regular people.

That’s why it’s crucial to watch for your management leadership leaks that are quietly stealing your energy. And the reason for this is simple: Those unmanaged leaks will compound energy loss and emotional depletion.

How to Manage Your Energy Leaks: The 3 S’s

If you’re noticing your energy leaks taking a toll on your performance, I want to introduce you to a simple framework that can help. It’s the 3 S’s, and it goes as follows:

  • Stop: Take a moment to stop and notice if or when you’re getting triggered. This is an absolutely critical step for managing your energy leaks. If you go about your day getting emotionally “set off” by every other thing that happens, that will drain you.
  • Shift: Here is where you’ll shift your emotional state. Take a slow breath and reconnect to your values and purpose. This will also help to center you emotionally so that you’re not going haywire when things come up. You’ll be calm, cool, and collected.
  • Select: Now, at this final step, you’ll choose a response (from an emotionally grounded state) that is aligned with your values and purpose. This is all about responding to situations rather than reacting. It’s a subtle but powerful difference that can be an absolute game changer in both your personal and professional lives.

This simple 3-step framework will give you the correct ways to respond so that you can cover those energy leaks and start allocating your energy to the things that matter most.
