I remember sitting in my office after a leadership presentation years ago, replaying every mistake in my mind. One awkward sentence. One moment I wished I’d handled differently. Meanwhile, people were thanking me, encouraging me, telling me how helpful it had been.
But none of that was louder than the voice in my own head.
“You should’ve done better.”
“You will never be enough.”
“You always mess up.”
That’s the power of the inner critic. And if we’re not careful, it can become the loudest voice in our lives.
The challenge is that many high-performing people believe harsh self-talk is what keeps them driven. But over time, criticism doesn’t create sustainable growth—it creates exhaustion, anxiety, and self-sabotage.
What changed my life was learning to develop an inner coach instead.
An inner coach doesn’t ignore mistakes. It simply responds differently. It says:
“Okay, what can we learn from this?”
“You’re growing.”
“Take the next step.”
That shift matters because the voice you listen to most shapes the life you build.
Here are three ways to strengthen your inner coach:
- Catch the Narrative. Notice the automatic thoughts running through your mind. Awareness creates choice.
- Replace Judgment with Curiosity. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with me?” ask, “What can I learn here?”
- Speak to Yourself Like Someone You Care About. Compassion fuels resilience far more effectively than shame ever will.
At Certified Flourishing Coach and Flourishing Workplace, we believe mental fitness begins with the conversations happening inside us every day.
Because when your mind becomes a place of support instead of sabotage, everything changes.
