I’ve had conversations where I could almost feel the wall going up.

A question came across too sharply. A response felt judgmental. Someone became defensive.

And suddenly, we weren’t really talking anymore.

We were protecting ourselves.

One of my favourite principles in the CHANGE Coach Accelerator™ is simple:

In every relationship, we either put up a wall or a bridge.

A wall is built for protection.

A bridge is built for connection.

Think about how easily walls can appear in everyday leadership and coaching conversations.

“Why did you do that?”
“We’ve already discussed this.”
“Here’s what you need to do.”

Even when our intentions are good, our communication can sometimes create defensiveness instead of openness.

Great coaches learn to build bridges:

  1. Replace judgment with curiosity.
Try: “Help me understand what was happening.”
  2. Listen before you solve.
People often need to feel heard before they’re ready to explore what could change.
  3. Communicate respect, even (and especially!) when accountability is necessary.
Trust isn’t built by avoiding difficult conversations. It’s built by having difficult conversations in a way that preserves dignity.

The CHANGE Coach Accelerator™ emphasizes that coaches aren’t there to direct, push, or pull people toward change. We help by listening, asking thoughtful questions, offering empathy, and creating the relational conditions where people can explore their own path forward.

This goes far beyond professional coaching. Managers build bridges. Parents build bridges. Teams build bridges. Friends build bridges.

Or we build walls.

Every conversation leaves something behind.

The question is: What are your conversations building?

When people feel safe enough to lower the walls, connection becomes possible.

And connection creates the bridge where trust, growth, and transformation can begin.
