I remember coaching a leader who had experienced a remarkable breakthrough.

They finally understood why they kept avoiding difficult conversations. They recognized the fear behind their behaviour and could see how it was affecting their team.

It was a powerful moment.

But a few weeks later, we met again.

Nothing had changed.

They had gained awareness, but hadn’t taken action.

That experience reinforced something I’ve learned through years of coaching:

Insight can change how we think. But action changes how we live.

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) recognizes this through its Facilitates Client Growth competency, helping clients turn learning and insight into meaningful action.

At Certified Flourishing Coaching, we believe transformation requires more than a great conversation. It requires helping people take ownership of their growth.

Here are three practices that make a difference:

  1. Turn Awareness Into Ownership.
When clients discover something important, ask, “What does this insight mean for how you want to move forward?”

Awareness becomes powerful when people decide what to do with it.

  1. Make Action Small and Meaningful.
Big breakthroughs don’t always require big changes. Sometimes one courageous conversation or one new habit creates momentum.

Ask, “What’s one step you’re willing to take this week?”

  1. Create Space for Learning and Accountability.
Growth rarely happens perfectly. Help clients reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and what they’re learning along the way.

Great coaching doesn’t end when the session ends.

It continues through the choices people make afterward.

Because lasting transformation isn’t simply about what people discover during coaching. It’s about who they’re becoming between conversations.

And that’s what flourishing is all about.
