Can I be honest with you for a minute? People today are weak. We live in an instant gratification culture where people are willing to throw up their hands and quit at the slightest sign of difficulty. We just don’t have tenacity anymore. And that’s a shame because we used to be a society that valued grit, gumption, and that get-up-and-go mentality. We had courage. We had confidence. And we had discipline.
Now we have safe spaces. We have trigger warnings. And we have microaggressions. What happened? The truth is that we lost our resilience. And I think it’s time that we reclaim. Here are 3 simple steps that can help you reclaim your inner resilience. Keep reading to learn more.
3 Steps to Reclaim Your Resilience
Resilience. The Key trait that will help you bounce back from failure, setbacks, heartbreak, and more. When challenges arise, resilience helps you rise to the challenge. This is one of those key factors I think we all understand on an intuitive level, but don’t really apply on a practical level. There’s a difference between understanding and knowing.
When you understand something, you get it logically. But when you know something, it goes to your gut. You live it and act it out in your daily life. With that in mind, here are the 3 steps that are going to help you build your resilience muscle.
1. Create a Compelling Vision
You need something in your life that is exciting and emotionally compelling. This is what draws you forward past difficulties and hardships. What goals do you want to achieve? What possessions do you want to own? What experiences do you want to have? Write them all down. Better yet, create a vision board with those goals and plaster it on your wall where you can see it every day. Create a mosaic.
You want to be able to keep your goals at the forefront of your mind as often as possible. You want to see them when you wake up, see them when you go to bed, and think about them throughout the day.
2. Use the Pain-Pleasure Principle
Developed by renowned psychologist Sigmund Freud, the Pain-Pleasure Principles is a psychological concept. It suggests that in everything we do, we are either trying to avoid pain or gain pleasure. So, the key to getting yourself to take consistent action toward your goals is to learn how to associate pleasure WITH taking action and pain with being lazy.
This is how you gain emotional leverage over yourself, and it’s a critical aspect to taking consistent action over a prolonged period of time.
3. Lock Into Your Good Habits
I went through a very difficult time in my a couple of years ago. I’ll spare you the details as it’s a long story, but the end result was that I lost almost everything. I was forced to sleep on an air mattress in my brother’s spare bedroom for the next year as a result. But I had one thing going for me during that time… It was the healthy and good quality habits that I engaged in every day.
The exercising, eating healthy, journaling, waking up, etc., gave me a foundation to stand on when it seemed like everything else around me was crumbling at my feet. And that’s what good habits do—they give you a baseline. A firm footing to plant yourself when you get hit by life.
So start today to build your own healthy set of habits and routines. This will help you keep you afloat when everything is flooded, but it will also ensure you’re continually growing when things are going well.
