We are all growing as leaders in our lives and businesses. I believe it is a never-ending process. As a result, we need to learn how to be patient with our teams, our results, and with ourselves. This is what allows us to grow, learn, and develop at our own pace. And when we allow that to happen and take shape, naturally, on its own, we support our growth.

That’s why it’s important to adopt the mindset of a leader. Why? Because there’s a different way that leaders look at things and think about things. If you want to grow your business and achieve your potential, then you’ve got to have a leadership breakthrough. Here’s how to do it.

Face Your Challenges

The worst thing you can do is to try to run from your problems and difficulties. The only way to truly grow into your leadership capacity is to face the things that you’re afraid of. Whether it’s a hard conversation with a client or a project you’ve been putting off, you have to face (head on) the things that intimidate you. Growth is found in the struggle.

Your Breakthrough Breaks Open the Way for Others

Thousands had tried to scale Mount Everest for hundreds of years. Another example is Thomas Edison inventing the electric light bulb. Even though he didn’t invent electricity, his lightbulb invention paved the way for us to lead the lives we get to lead today. Whether it’s plugging in your phone to charge or hopping on a Zoom meeting with your team, we all get to benefit from the breakthrough Thomas Edison made.

Here’s the thing… If you’re planning for one year, you grow rice. If you’re planning for 20 years, you grow trees. But if you’re planning for centuries, you grow people. I’m in the people-growing industry. Let’s explore what we need to do in order to reach the next level.

Going to a Higher Level

The good news about reaching a higher level in your life is that there is a simple process that anyone can follow. And once you commit, it becomes only a matter of time before you can reach the destination you want in your life.

1. Get Unhappy (Desperation)

This may seem counterproductive to a lot of advice you hear. But the truth is that in order to inspire real and lasting change, sometimes you have to reach a point of dissatisfaction in your life. Sometimes, desperation is a massive key in your growth. Think about it… When do you see some of the greatest inventions come to life?

It’s often when the person is in dire desperation and they NEED and have no choice but to make something happen. Creativity can often come at a peak during times of desperation, when your back is up against the wall.

2. Master Your Current Level (Focus)

It’s so important to master that level that you’re currently on before you even think about moving to the next one. So many people want something given to them. We live in a culture where entitlement is the mantra of the day. I see this a lot. There are so many people out there who walk around feeling like they deserve or are owed something.

But I’m going to tell you straight up, the Universe, God, your parents don’t owe you anything. They brought you into this world, and that’s enough because life is a gift. And if you’re not really performing too well at your current level, what makes you entitled to be given more at the next level? So master your current level by getting focused.

3. Set a Clear Goal (Vision and Dream)

Oprah Winfrey once said, “Create the highest, grandest vision possible for your life because you become what you believe.” I absolutely love that quote! I love it because Oprah models and lives that quote. She’s been able to build a very influential and impactful life. No one can deny that. And if she can do it, why can’t you?

Because here’s the truth: Your dreams are the divine whispers of your unawakened potential. They are calling you forward into the life you were meant to live. You would not have those dreams in your mind and heart if they weren’t designed specifically for you to achieve.

4. Shed Excess Weight (Be Nimble)

We are being watched (in a good way) by people who desperately want us to succeed (friends, family, loved ones, etc). For this reason, we owe it to them to let go of the things that hold us down so that we can start winning. Some of the things that we should shed might include the following:

  • Cluttered focus
  • Unhealthy habits
  • Emotional baggage
  • Self-sabotage
  • Negative thinking

By letting go of the things that hold us back, we finally give ourselves the permission we need to flourish. And only then will our lives take on new colour and meaning. I think this is one of the most powerful ways we can move forward to better tomorrows.

5. Get Some Partners (Teamwork)

I truly believe in the power of community. And that’s why I love the community that we’ve created at Flourishing. We are all here to support one another. There’s an African Proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” And here’s the thing: Partnerships are not just about pooling potential; they’re about multiplying possibilities.

I know that you’re awesome already, all on your own. No doubt about it. But when you partner with the right people, all of a sudden, the possibilities in your life will multiply. But the thing is, you have to actually make time for those partnerships.
