Everyone dreams of living their ideal life.
As human beings, we naturally want to succeed, live in the present moment, follow the passion that brings us to life, and experience our highest potential. The problem? We are hindered by our own self-sabotaging, limiting beliefs. And overcoming these barriers, for many of us, is a lifelong journey.
However, that doesn’t make it impossible.
In fact, you can start unlocking your potential much quicker than you think if you’re willing to take action, build momentum, and commit to success. And here comes the good part… In this article, I’ll show you how you can tap into your personal power and create a life truly worth living.
Keep reading to learn 7 brilliant ways you can unlock your potential and overcome your limitations.
1. Stop Arguing for Your Limitations
There’s a Native American Proverb that says, “You can only be what you give yourself the permission to be.” This means you need to begin giving yourself permission to accomplish your goals. That’s the first step because here’s the deal…
You (and everyone else) have a “permission list” and a “limitations list” in your brain.
Imagine it like a spreadsheet with two columns. One column has your limitations; the other has your permissions. Life and maturity are about the process of moving things from the limitation list to the permission list. In what areas of life are you failing to give yourself permission to chase after the amazing things you want and desire?
You must break this pattern if you want to reach your full potential. In short, you have to stop arguing for your limitations! And how do you do that? Simple, you need to start to…
2. Give Yourself Permission
Quick story…
For years, I was afraid of heights. And even though it was by no means a crippling fear, it still held me back from one of my big dreams: To skydive. In other words, skydiving was on my “limitations list.” But then, one day, something interesting began to happen.
I decided to move skydiving from my limitations list to my permission list.
This inspiration encouraged me to go skydiving with some friends! And with their support, my dream became a reality simply because I gave myself permission! Now, I’ll go skydiving anytime! Why? Because it was one of the most exhilarating experiences of my life!
Most people don’t realize the future could be so much better if only they gave themselves permission.
The challenge is learning how to get past the feelings of fear and uncertainty. But the incredible thing is that growth and true self-improvement are on the other side when you finally decide to…
3. Shift Your Mindset to Surmount Limits
One of the challenges in life is there are many things you can’t control.
You can’t control the weather, what other people will do or say, or what has happened in the past. But what you can control is your mindset. You can control your ideas, your thinking, your vision, etc. As a result, you can also control the person you’d most like to become by creating success habits in your life.
And all it takes to achieve this control is a shift in perspective—a change in your mindset.
Mindset is the bridge between listening and living. It’s one thing to understand something intellectually, and it’s another to actually live it out in your daily life. And that’s where the power of your mindset will come into play.
Whether you’re scaling your business, learning a new skill, getting an education, or anything in between, your mindset is the key that will determine how far you go on the path you’ve chosen.
So if you’re at the point in your life where you know things but aren’t living them, I promise you…
It’s all about your mindset.
This kind of self-discovery will help you reach the finish line of your goals much quicker. Creating a stronger mindset comes when you shift your perspective regarding what you believe and what things mean to you.
4. Find Your Purpose
Your fullest potential will remain untapped until you find your purpose in life.
In achieving success, your job is to chart your own course in this world. And the only way to do that is to commit to your own personal journey and take small steps toward your goals daily. You can create an exciting future, achieve your grandest goals, and become the person you were meant to be. But it all begins with finding your purpose.
Here are a few tips that can help:
- Uncover what you care about
- Explore your interests and curiosities
- Follow your inspiration
- Take inventory of your strengths, abilities, and natural talents
- Stop waiting and start taking action
- Ask those you trust for support
Finding your purpose is the single most effective way to unlock your potential in life. Moreover, it’s essential to help you break through limiting beliefs.
5. Accept Failure With Self-Compassion
Most people never unlock their full potential because they’re afraid to fail.
Failure is a part of success—you can’t have one without the other. You must step out of your comfort zone and try new things to unlock your potential. There’s power in those kinds of experiences. Why? Because they are the key to opening the door to life’s treasures.
Here’s the deal…
The world will give you what you want, but you must be willing to put yourself on the line to get it! And this is where practising self-compassion comes into play. Be patient during this process; accept failure with self-compassion, knowing that the world will open up to you if you persist.
Your ability to focus on your goals is critical.
When you achieve your aims, you develop the skills, knowledge, and self-belief to reach bigger goals. As a result, a new world of possibility will begin to open up to you. And slowly, step by step, your purpose will emerge.
6. Speak New Mantras
One of the small wins that can help you unlock your potential is controlling how you speak to yourself. Science has proven the power of affirmations. It’s one of those atomic habits that can help lay the foundation for success.
Here’s where it gets interesting…
When you focus your language and use it correctly, you take your ideas and use them to create your reality. This kind of thinking can offer numerous benefits if it’s done consistently. Some of these advantages include the following:
- Unlock your full potential
- Condition your brain for success
- Change your mental environment
- Stops you from being overly critical of yourself
- Achieve more confidence and self-assuredness
- Create better thought habits
So start speaking kindly to yourself. It will put you on a better path of self-care and condition you to become success-conscious rather than failure-conscious.
7. Question Your Limiting Beliefs
I can’t believe we’re so quick to doubt our possibilities yet so slow to bring that same skepticism to our self-defeating thoughts. What would happen if you doubted your limits as much as you doubted your capacity for success? Your full potential would not be so impeded.
As such, it’s time to start questioning your limiting thoughts and their validity. Your success depends on it. Here’s how to begin the process:
- Challenge your beliefs: Ask yourself if what you believe is the “truth.” Look for evidence to the contrary. If you look, you will find. A simple search will quickly reveal that your self-defeating thoughts aren’t as valid as you initially believed.
- Acknowledge that it’s only a thought: What is a belief? It’s nothing but a thought roaming around in your head. With this being the case, a simple solution emerges. If even your most deep-seated beliefs are nothing more than thoughts, you can replace them with new thoughts and, as a result, create new beliefs.
- Get a replacement: Finding and acknowledging your limiting thoughts is not enough. You need to replace them. You do this by adopting a new ideal and dwelling on it day and night. Think about it in your mind; talk about it with your friends; write about it in your journal. And with enough time and repetition, the new thought will replace the old one—even if you don’t believe it right now.
